The forerunner to the Back Buoy™ was the Moller, developed in Denmark by Dr. Moller and later perfected by his nephew, Frederick Wendelboe. Although the original device was designed primarily to copy an ideal lumbar spinal curve, its final configuration allows it also to help control shoulder blade position while sitting. The core of the Back Buoy™ is made of high impact plastic. It has gone through many endurance tests and has never been broken. Various materials have been tested for the cover and comfort foam and currently only the highest quality materials are being utilized resulting in a very long-wearing product.

 By converting the “C” spinal curve of a seated, slumping individual to the normal, neutral “S” curve, two major gains are realized. Body weight is shifted off the lumbar discs on to the joints and ligaments, which are better suited for weight-bearing. At the same time the shoulder blades are moved closer to the midline creating a forward torque on both collar bones, which attach to the outer edge of the shoulder blades at the shoulder joint. This outward shift instantly relieves pressure on the draining veins of the head, neck and upper extremities and probably the upper spinal cord as well. Stretch and compression of nerves to both arms is also reduced. These anatomic corrections produce relief of pain, heaviness, tingling and fatigue in the arms and hands, and in most people, reduced pain and tingling in the back and legs.
